We used anatto to tint certain foods. However, this product was useless. It’s preferably to use anatto seeds instead of this product. Answering your question, yes, we heat it with oil and other stuff, but like I said, it didn’t help.

There aren’t any other ingredients listed on the label. There is not a list for ingredients at all on this bottle. There is a sentence on the back that says, 'used for color and flavor in a variety of dishes such as rice, vegetables, meat stews, and fish, Annatto is found in the pulp that covers the seeds of a native Caribbean tree.'

Does it contain Red 40?

I don’t believe it does. It’s the natural color of the seed it’s ground from. Remember do use too much of it as it will give it an earthy flavor.

Will this replace paprika as a blackening agent on meats?

Annatto is heavily used in Latin America as a dye, it is responsible for the yellow color in cheese among other things, not a blackening agent.
