  Answer : No the 1176 does not have a magnetic base. The 1381 Bell & Howell does have a magnetic base.

  Answer : It WILL help start a fire But you have to have a bit of sun and unscrew the lens and use it as a magnifier in small brush but then again you Need Sun pure cloudiness will Not work.

  Answer : I really do not know. When I purchased one - there was only one single light.
• Question : Is this usable for self defense?
  Answer : I guess that depends on your version of self defense. At its brightest I could see it being used against humans as a blinding defense, however the light is adjustable with light pressure to the button and can often change without meaning too. So reliability suffers if you were going to use it for quick time defense against an assailant. If you were thinking of using it physically for defense such a battering or bludgeoning I wouldn't recommend it due to the size and shape. But if course in a fight or flight situation you could use pretty much anything. Hope this helps.
