Product Details

  • The SharkTap is a special purpose 10/100/1000Base-T ethernet device that allows you to 'tap into' an ethernet connection. It is intended to be used with the free Wireshark protocol analyzer or equivalent.erter
  • Conventional switches route packets only to the intended destination port, reducing traffic but preventing a third port from seeing all packets. The SharkTap duplicates all packets to or from the Network ports to the TAP port.erter
  • Supports 10, 100 and 1000Base-T, all ports. Power-Over-Ethernet (PoE) pass-through.erter
  • Powered from a micro-USB cable (included), draws 350mA or less.erter
  • Other features: Auto-MDIX, so no crossover cables ever needed. Non-conductive enclosure for lab work. Will NOT route packets from TAP to Network ports.erter

Customer Questions & Answers

  • Question : What is the purpose of the SharkTap?
Answer : The SharkTap is a special purpose ethernet device that allows you to monitor and analyze network traffic.
  • Question : What software is compatible with the SharkTap?
Answer : The SharkTap is intended to be used with free software like Wireshark.
  • Question : Does the SharkTap support Power-over-Ethernet?
Answer : Yes, the SharkTap has Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) pass-through.
  • Question : Where is this manufactured?
Answer : They are assembled in USA, in New Jersey.
  • Question : How can this possibly work properly with only a single output jack? ethernet is full duplex - to see traffic both ways you need 2 outputs.
Answer : This works similarly to a bi-directional port mirror on a switch, taking the load off of the switch and is essentially an aggregate port tap with 1 monitor port. The SharkTap is similar to the Ixia Net Optics 10/100/1Gb Copper port Aggregator. Currently, the SharkTap is used to mirror all traffic going to an Internet firewall. This mirrored traffic is examined on a Linux server running NTOP professional that gives real-time stats of transmit and receive top talkers and flow information by end station.
  • Question : Is the monitoring port bidirectional?
Answer : No, packets that come to the TAP on the monitoring port are discarded. The monitor port will auto-negotiate as a full-duplex link, at the link level, but no data is accepted on the monitoring port, only sent out from the SharkTap.
  • Question : There are 3 ports. Which port(s) should be connected to the network switch & which one to the computer sniffing the traffic?
Answer : The two ports on either end of the tap are for your pass-through internet traffic. The other is to connect to the sniffing computer. The ports are labeled.
  • Question : Some customers experienced overheating and malfunctions. is this due to pcb quality or ineffective passive heating design? ideas to cope/modify units?
Answer : There were two early problems, one due to a noisy voltage regulator chip, and another due to bad EEE default settings in the Broadcom switch chip. Both of these problems are fixed, and the product is very stable at this point.
  • Question : Can I use this to spit out Charles proxy files instead of using Wireshark?
Answer : Yes, the PC with Charles Proxy installed must be plugged in the central port (Tap port) so the traffic is copied and then you can capture and analyze it.
  • Question : Can I use as speed test
Answer : No, the purpose of this device is to provide an integrated packet stream to your packet capture software.
  • Question : Does the device need external power?
Answer : Yes, it takes power from any USB port or cell phone charger with a microUSB plug. A cable is included.

midBit Technologies, LLC 10/100/1000 POE Switches Editorial Review

The SharkTap is a reliable and easy-to-use network tap designed to provide an integrated packet stream to packet capture software. It is assembled in the USA, in New Jersey. The tap has one monitor port and two pass-through ports for internet traffic, and it requires external power. The monitor port is bidirectional, but packets that come to the tap on the monitoring port are discarded. The tap works as a bi-directional port mirror on a switch, which takes load off the switch, and it comes in handy in deep-diving into protocol analysis. Some customers have reported early problems due to a noisy voltage regulator chip and bad EEE default settings in the Broadcom switch chip. However, these issues have been fixed, and the product is very stable at this point. Overall, the SharkTap is a convenient tool for troubleshooting and network analysis, and it is highly recommended for anyone who needs to capture WAN traffic or perform inline packet capture.

Pros

  • Reliable and easy-to-use network tap
  • Provides an integrated packet stream to packet capture software
  • Comes in handy in deep-diving into protocol analysis

Cons

  • Some customers have reported early problems due to noisy voltage regulator chip and bad EEE default settings in Broadcom switch chip.
  • Product struggled to maintain 100mbps for some customers.
