That happens to be my main concern as of now with alot of these 'low profile' drives, planning to use with a raspberry piAnswer : Some info on the compatibility with the RPi 4 B. While this small flash drive is perfectly small for a RPi, this device is only slightly better performing than the earlier non-Plus version, which means, it is terrible for the RPi. Either the RPi or this particular flash drive controller has compatibility issues but I have not seen such issues with several other flash manufacturers, so I don't (yet) blame the RPi 4. My general rule is, do not use a Samsung Flash, or M.2 SSD on a RPi 4 B. I had hoped that Samsung (which really seems to be the culprit) would have fixed something in the Plus version so that RPi 4 would like it, but not so. My flash/NAND storage favorites for RPi 4 are: The latest Sandisk (sadly long) Extreme Pro has great performance Silicon Power M.2 SSDs Sabrent SSDs WD Blue (perhaps other colors) Do not attempt to use ANY Samsung M.2 SSD on a USB adapter for a RPi 4 - I have done extensive testing of M.2 SSDs and USB-to-M.2 adapters and never have I seen a Samsung M.2 SSD work. Maybe someday. :(
- Question : Can I install a Mac OS, option boot On startup and use it as a hard drive?Answer : Yes. I installed macOS High Sierra on it and can start up from it whenever I need to use that OS. It works great and the speed is fine.
- Question : What is the default file system formatted as?Answer : Since the answers vary, going to guess it might depend on size. Maybe the smaller sized drives are still formatted in FAT32 whilst the larger size drives come as ExFat. For what it is worth, there are third party utilities to get around the formatting limitations of FAT32 in a Windows OS, so if one really needs a 256GB drive formatted as FAT32 there are third party programs out there for such a purpose.
- Question : Can this be used for dashcam, with constant writing/deleting?Answer : Write speed seems to be a problem. Keep getting the error on my Tesla Model 3 'USB write speed too slow for Dashcam. Use a drive that can write at 4MB/s or higher'. The write speed on this drive should be much higher than 4MB/s, but it's not.
- Question : I purchased a 128GB, the silvertip say 128GB, but it only reads as 32GB FAT32. Am I missing something?Answer : FAT32 only supports a max of 32GB. To use all 128GB you'll need to reformat using a different file system type. On Windows, you can use exFAT or NTFS.
- Question : Can this be used for ready boost?Answer : You may need to format it FAT32 as the Raspberry Pi OS is 32 bit. Debian is 64 bit.
- Question : Does it work on a MacBook?Answer : Yes, it does.
- Question : Anyone know the transfer speed on the 32GB version?Answer : That is a smart aleck answer. Of course, it says 200 or 300 MB/s. But the important data is missing. Is that number the read or write number. I, for one, need the write speed. What is that?
