The Encyclopedia of Counseling is a comprehensive test preparation book designed for students taking the National Counselor Examination, State Counseling Exams, and the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination. The question-and-answer technique is a great way to test oneself on concepts, but some readers found it overwhelming in certain chapters to miss so many questions. Users suggest a strategy for using sticky notes to mark questions and terms that need to be revisited. Although the author, Rosenthal, is knowledgeable, some readers found him to be a bit full of himself. They noted that the dictionary of human services accompanying the book is not as comprehensive as expected, and that some theories that Rosenthal mentions in the book are not included in the dictionary. Despite these limitations, most readers agree that the book is a lot of information in a small space and is worth the money and time invested to prepare for the exams. At least one user was able to pass the exam by using this book in combination with the audio program.
