The back can go down flat and the front and back are not attached. However, there are some complaints about the design of the bench, specifically that it seems designed for short people and the joint in the backrest sits in the middle of the back for anyone over 5'6". There are also complaints about the stability of the bench, with the crossbar-bench connection not sitting flat and wobbling issues. The instructions were lacking, but it was still simple enough to assemble.
