it needs to be pulled up and pushed back every time you use it.

Does it get easier to squeeze after you use it for a while? I just bought it and it is really tight!

Yes and no. It is supposed to be like any standard water bottle. A little pressure to squeeze is all it takes, whether new or old. You can try changing your grip. I usually do it without my thumb.
