How effective is the noise-canceling for loud environments like lawn mowing, airplane travel, and coffee shops?

In my experience, the noise-canceling is not very effective for environments like lawn mowing or loud airplanes and coffee shops. I can still hear my music, although not as loud, even when the volume is at the maximum. My ring tone is louder in comparison.
