Yes. The very top shelf above the enclosure is optional. You do not need to attach it to the base. This is how I have mine set up.

Is the back metal rods / shelf required to be used? Or can I use the shelf without it so I can stack enclosures on it?

No it’s not required. It’s sturdy enough without it. The main benefit of the additional piece is so you can secure it to the wall.

Can this support a 120 gallon aquarium? Full of water it weighs 1054 pounds will it hold long term

We just started using it with a 120 gallon terrarium. It seems pretty heavy duty for being press board, put together furniture.
