The back of these thermometers is black so it absorbs the infra red radiation from the water through the glass into the sensor of the thermometer.

It doesn't matter where it goes, but it may not hold its temperature accurately after a couple of weeks.

It sticks on to the side of the tank. There is a sensor on it and it is fairly accurate.

Does this thermometer have an alarm to alert when the temperature goes above a certain temperature or below a certain temperature? Any ideas which do?

This unit does not have an alarm alert - Hagen does not have a model with an alarm.

Is it ok for a 13m glass?

Personally, I would invest in a digital thermometer and stick it in the water. The water temperature was a couple of degrees off with this thermometer.

Not very big. Not very good either. I replaced both of mine with old fashioned cheap thermometers which are much better.

No instructions, how do you work this? Can't even get it on.

The bottom front black section with the logo on slides down. Left side is a button to select F or C reading. Right side is the battery compartment. Unscrew to open. There should be a pull-out plastic sliver into the battery compartment. Pull out for battery contact points to connect. It should start working unless battery is flat. The back of the casing has 2 recesses for 2 supplied sticky pads to attach the unit to the tank.

It attaches to the outside of the glass with a double-sided sticky pad. It measures room and tank temperature.

What size battery does this take?

It takes a small watch-like battery. However, it comes with one and should last a while. Battery can be purchased from anywhere as it is a standard size.
