Is the handle plastic?

The whole set is stainless steel. The only plastic is the case.

What is the carrying case made of?

The case is made of plastic, it comes off entirely. As in there is no hinges. The case is okay. Np there. However, I don't know if they sell others but the utensils are pretty big. The spoon is huge, you need a big mouth for it. LOL. it isn't good for a child. I want to get more for camping purposes, but I will do a search first for others. But I still recommend it. I use it for at work. I hate using the cafeteria plastic. Enjoy

Is it easy to open the container for a young kid?

It is a push up slide motion so really young children may have difficulty.

How long are the dinner utensils & the tea spoon/salad fork?

To be quite honest with you, I don't think this was Made in China, I don't think there is a Chinese person with a mouth as big as this utensil set. I wouldn't use this with my child. The spoon is the biggest OMG is it huge even for a grown man like me, I feel like I am almost using a garden shovel.
