The Black Pearl by Scott O'Dell is a fast-paced and exciting story about a young man named Ramón Salazar who tries to prove himself by diving deep into a cavern to get a monstrous black pearl. The characters are colorful and feel very realistic, particularly the Sevillano who drives the story forward. The book contains so much conflict in so few pages, making it a masterpiece. Overall, it is superior storytelling compared to O'Dell's better-known book The Island of the Blue Dolphins. However, one reader's daughter found it uninteresting despite being an easy read for an 11th grade reading level.
