My daughter is just starting her cycle so it's very light. But I inserted a sanitary napkin inside of the pull-up and it worked nicely for us.

I’ve only seen Little Mermaid/Elena for past couple years.

Can an 8-year-old wear pull-ups?

That would depend on the child's body shape and weight. Pull-ups are advertised by sizes. It's recommended to go by body shape and weight.

Are these scented at all?

I didn’t notice a scent. My daughter liked them all though they are a lot like diaper.
