Works very well cutting Ivy roots. This is a very sharp tool, however like all tools used in soil it will eventually need sharpening. A few strokes with a metal file will bring back the sharp edge. Remember only file in one direction for the best results.

I thought it would cut down high weeds. What am I missing?

It can cut any size weed, but it is made to pull through the ground and under them. So tall weeds may not be fun to cut down using this tool. They make similar things with a longer handle.

The blade is 4 3/4 inches long and 1 3/4 inch wide at the handle end. It tapers down to 1 1/2 inches wide at 3 inches from the handle and 1 inch wide at 4 inches from the handle.

Can this be used to hatch through beach grass?

I use this tool to weed and it is the very best tool I have ever purchased for this. It can even hack out deep carrot-like weed roots faster than anything I have ever tried. I have used it to cut back dead grass-like plants effectively.

Can the handle be replaced by a longer one?

The handle can be replaced by a qualified craftsman. I had a retired tool craftsman replace it with a purchased handle and it works fine. Cost to do the same can double the price.
