Customer Questions & Answers

  • Question : Is this black?
Answer : This is not ink. It is a two part photo reactive liquid that is used for making prints. The color of the prints that it gives you is blue. The liquid appears yellowish green until it has been developed. No black, no ink.
  • Question : Would someone please suggest a specific unbuffered paper to use with this kit?
Answer : I use watercolor paper. It is a pad of papers from canson
  • Question : Is this a powder or liquid kit?
Answer : It comes as a powder in the bottles that you just need to add water to.
  • Question : For cyanotype, must I use only cotton fabric? Or can I use canvas fabric as well?
Answer : Cotton will work, canvas will not. Canvas will work to an extent but without the “gesso”. Plus the texture of canvas is very heavy, which can make things interesting. Only experimenting will tell.
  • Question : How many cyanotypes could you make?
Answer : I was able to coat as many as 30 sheets of 11x14 paper easily.
  • Question : How much solution (ml) does each bottle contain? And will it be enough for 55 x 70 inch cotton fabric?
Answer : La botella A contiene 18 gramos de ferricianuro de potasio, 214 gramos(mL) de agua para llenar. La botella B contiene 54 gramos de citrato de amonio férrico, 185 gramos(mL) de agua para llenar. I used up my solution quite a while back, but there is definitely enough to cover the area that you are asking about.
  • Question : What is the shelf life after water is added? Can you just mix a small amount in a separate container?
Answer : Separately, Part A and Part B have a long shelf life, it is not until you combine Part A and Part B that chemical reaction for the cyanotype happens so you do not want to be mixing together until you are ready to do you project. If I am working on an 8 by 10 piece of paper as an example, I would only be using Teaspoon of Part A and a Teaspoon of Part B. You do not want to over mix, because if you were to mix the two of these together they are only stable for two to 4 hours, so anything that you do not use on paper fabric would be wasted, so it is always better to under mix because you can mix another small batch if you need a little bit more but unfortunately you can not keep Part A and Part B once they have been mixed together.
  • Question : Is this a permanent dye? Could i use it to make a print on a t-shirt and not worry about it washing out, for example?
Answer : Cyanotype has been used for textile printing for years. It should prove colorfast for you, but I recommend using natural fibers rather than synthetics.
  • Question : How would you apply the solution on wood to make a print? Then what would you put over print to seal it?
Answer : I have never done a cyanotype print on wood. I would imagine that you could apply your chemistry in the same way that you would to paper. I usually use a disposable foam brush. I am curious about how this would work.

Jacquard F-JCY1100 Dyes Editorial Review

The Cyanotype Fabric Printing Kit is an economical kit with great results for those new to the cyanotype process. The kit comes with two bottles that are filled with powder that needs to be mixed with water and left for 24 hours before use. With this kit, you can make beautiful prints on paper and fabric with a beautiful blue color. It comes with the chemicals needed for blue prints and instructions, although some customers noted the instructions could be better. Depending on the size of the project, you may need to mix more solution frequently as the parts A and B are only stable for two to four hours once mixed.

Pros

  • Easy to use for beginners
  • Economical with good results
  • Can be used on paper and fabric
  • Beautiful blue color

Cons

  • Instructions could be better
  • Some customers have reported difficulty with the process
