9 is the lowest recommended shade for arc welding. If you are plasma cutting or Ox-acetylene then I think 6 may be the lowest....

This welding helmet is a great value for money with excellent function and is recommended for anyone starting out. It may not be suitable for plasma cutting as it does not auto darken. The sensors and adjustments are great, giving an instant response time. This product is highly recommended, delivering clear view and ample eye protection. It is great for both work and projects at home, with easy use making it ideal for engineering classes and clubs.
