The seed pods require water for growth, and the sponges in the seed starting system are soaked in water from the bottom when the water level reaches the "Fill to Here" indicator. The seed starting system cannot fit the Aerogarden 3 Elite model, but it works great with the Harvest Elite Slim and 360 models.
