- Question : What is the best bottom medium to use? My local Petco has the white hermit crab sand or this soil patty type stuff you add water to that expands.Answer : DO NOT USE THIS SAND! It adds stuff that is dangerous to crabbies while they molt and is ridiculously expensive. Crabs need 6 inches of substrate: 5 parts PLAYSAND (10x cheaper!) and 1 part ecoearth. Check out Hermit Crab Owners on Facebook for more information. Crabs are not easy pets and need much more than most are led to believe.
- Question : Is this sand safe to plant in?Answer : I doubt that you should use this to plant in. It contains sea salt to help mimic the makeup of the sand a crab would live in by the ocean.
- Question : How many pounds is the bag?Answer : Each bag is 6 lbs. I use 2 bags for each 15 to 20 gallon tank. The more substrate the better.
- Question : Can this sand be used as a substrate for tortoises?Answer : Yes, it can.
- Question : Would this work in a butterfly puddler?Answer : I'm not sure what is necessary for that, but if you have kids handling it, I would advise against it. The back of the bag has a cancer warning.
- Question : Is this a good sand for axolotls?Answer : I use it for Hermit crabs. I am not sure about axolotls. It is a great sand and you reminded me to order more!
- Question : Can this sand be used for a leopard gecko?Answer : Leopard geckos should never be on a sand substrate as it can cause eye infections and upper respiratory problems.
- Question : Why does this sand stick to my Hermit Crabs?Answer : Great product and my hermit crabs love it.
- Question : Is this sand safe to use for artificial succulents? Does it have a fishy smell?Answer : I used artificial succulents and had no issue due to sand. My issue was with the humidity I needed to retain and the artificial succulent did not hold up well under the heat and humidity conditions - I now use only real plants which the sand helps retain the moisture really well. The sand has not had a fishy smell.
