The disc with a circle of holes goes behind the sandpaper disc. It is screwed onto the spindle/shaft and holds the sandpaper in place.

How do I ensure that the attachment is correctly and safely seated in the collet?

To securely fasten the fitting: 1) Select the fitting you want to use, 2) Choose a collet that best fits the fitting, 3) Put the collet, metal cap, and fitting in order, 4) Use the small spanner included to tighten the metal cap.

Is it normal for the wand to get too hot to hold? And the chuck is already cracking.

Ensure that the rotary unit is above the wand and hang it above you as you work to prevent overheating. The cracking of the chuck may be due to excessive power usage.
