For us contract produced MREs, 5 years is the specified minimum shelf life. The commercial and overrun MRE components are made to a comparable standard. These rations are periodically inspected in the military for damage and storage conditions. If they pass this inspection they are recertified, as they can easily last several times this initial shelf-life. The commercial products may or may not get inspections that meet these timeframes but MRE items stored properly are indistinguishable from new ones.
