Can one use an LED bulb in this lamp? Compact Fluorescents have to be okay, no?

YES!!! You can use LED bulbs in this lamp.

While holding the top half and trying to screw it into the bottom half the pipe keeps falling beyond the bottom half. What am I missing? Please help!

You do not screw the top half into the bottom half. You have to turn the internal rod and screw that up into the top half from underneath the bottom base.
