The Jim Dunlop M288 Bass Octave Deluxe is well received by customers who appreciate the flexibility and the great sound it adds to their music. The pedal is said to be easy to figure out and it offers the ability to add active and sub octaves to guitar and bass tracks. One customer, who is a guitarist, praised the M288 for its superior sound quality and durability in comparison to the Boss pedal. The pedal is also noted for being phenomenal on both four and five-string basses. Another customer, however, was disappointed with the overall build quality of the pedal and found the sound to be muddy no matter how they adjusted the controls. Another customer expressed a preference for the Aguilar Octamizer, finding that the M288 was not as good at tracking or sustaining low frequencies. Despite these issues, the M288 is viewed positively by most customers and is Considered a highly usable pedal when coupled with other effects.
