    Answer : The one I got in November 2020 has expiration date of September 2022. I expect the Black ones to have similar shelf life. I know that some HP ink-jet carriages are programmed to stop working after the expiration date, but have not experienced that with Brother's.
  • Question : Can you use lc201bk in place of lc203bk?
    Answer : Yes you can use 201 in place of 203. The LC203BK is higher yield ink. You just get more pages per cartridge with the 203
  • Question : Does this have 1 or 2 cartridges for the price of $35.99? The heading says two, but the description says 1.
    Answer : The Brother LC-2032PKS cartridge pack includes 2 LC-203BK ink cartridges.
  • Question : Does ink dry out if printer is not used?
    Answer : I seldom print with my MFC-J485DW. The ink never dried out but it does disappear even without being used. I think it has something to do with some kind of automatic self-cleaning. The last time it happened I removed the empties and did not repurchase. Now I only use it for FAXing and scanning.
  • Question : I thought this has all the colors with black one. My printer is mfc-j5520dw. So far as I know if there is only black I can not print. What to do?
    Answer : Your Brother MFCJ5520DW machine may automatically enter black and white only mode when one or more of its color ink cartridges reaches the end of its life. When this happens, your machine's LCD will display 'B&W 1-sided Print Only - Replace Ink.' You can't manually put your machine into black and white only mode. Your printer is designed to stop ALL printing operations when any of the ink cartridges are have reached their end-of-life. This is to ensure the life of the printhead and to maintain premium print quality. Some ink from all the ink cartridges is used in periodic cleaning cycles. This helps to prevent issues such as printhead clogs and poor print quality. There is no way to bypass this feature. If one or more color ink cartridges are low but not at the end of their usable life and you want to minimize the use of color ink, change the settings in the Brother software to print with black ink only (grayscale). If you print with black ink only, the other ink cartridges must have ink for the printer to print. When an ink cartridge is depleted, you must replace it before you can print. If you print with black ink only, the printer may still use small amounts of ink from all the ink cartridges for occasional servicing tasks. Brother recommends that you replace any low ink cartridges to avoid any interruptions in printing.

The ink has a shelf life of approximately two years, and it does not dry out if the printer is not used. However, some Brother printers will stop all printing operations once one or more ink cartridges reach their end-of-life to maintain premium print quality and prolong the printhead's life.
