Customer Questions & Answers

  • Question : Is this product safe for freshwater crustaceans?
Answer : No, it is not safe to use with freshwater crustaceans including shrimp, crabs and lobsters.
  • Question : How often should I use API ALGAEFIX Algae Control Solution?
Answer : To treat algae, add 1 ml per 10 gallons of water and repeat every three days until algae is controlled. Use this aquarium treatment weekly to keep freshwater aquariums clean and clear.
  • Question : What other API Aquarium Treatment Supplies can be used in conjunction with this product?
Answer : API Aquarium Treatment Supplies are designed to work in conjunction with each other to provide best results to control algae, promote healthy bacterial growth and help control and cure fish diseases and conditions such as ich and fin rot.
  • Question : How often can I use this product?
Answer : I use the product every three days until the algae blooms are under control, and then I use it once a week thereafter. In hot weather, I have to go back to the first plan -- every three days. That type of use has not harmed the snails, fish, turtle, or frogs in the pond, but it does zap the algae quite well.
  • Question : Is it safe for waterfowl, ex. duck, egrets?
Answer : It is toxic if not diluted; use as directed and mix in water in a container before adding to pond then is safe for anything!
  • Question : Can this be used in birdbaths to help with algae?
Answer : It would probably hurt the birds skin or even kill them if they drank it. So, no, I wouldn't use it for that. I think algae in a bird bath is inevitable since they get so much sunlight. A good scrub once a week would be your best bet.
  • Question : What will work in a water feature with two pumps, flow and two waterfalls. About 1000 gallons. Algae grows on the rocks.
Answer : The best thing I have used is algaefix. Follow the directions on the bottle. I use it about once every week to keep my 3000 gallon clean.
  • Question : Will algaefix harm the silicone decorations in my tank? Do I have to remove these decorations in order to use this product correctly?
Answer : API Algaefix can be used with the silicone decorations within the aquarium without adverse effects.
  • Question : Can this be used with crystalclear 24243 d-solv9 quick fix pond cleaner, 16 fl. oz.?
Answer : Yes they can be used together, but I didn't have any luck with the algie fix from API.
  • Question : Any one know if this will kill your bio filters?
Answer : Not sure on the bio filters, but it killed half our fish.
  • Question : I have 6-gallon aqueon Ascent frameless tank. How many drops do you put in tank to control algae problem?
Answer : Don't do it. It killed every fish in my tank, I had to change out EVERYTHING and start from scratch. New substrate, airstone, any decoration, all plants, I mean EVERYTHING. This is cyanid.
  • Question : Will this work on brown algae?
Answer : API Algaefix is the top selling algaecide in the aquarium industry. API Algaefix Marine will treat brown algae as well as string algae and many others types of algae as well.
  • Question : Is this safe for birds?
Answer : I use this product 1x/week in summer. The fish need an extra oxygen source while this kills algae, for the first 24 hrs after adding to water I make a point of keeping the filter on AND running fountain for O2 source. The fish all move to directly under the return line within an hour after treatment. Safe to koi, goldfish, pond turtles, the lizards and a crow.. have all survived a dip in treated water. Also, savvy pond shop guy told that once algae is under control, cut back on dosage and see how much you can decrease recommended treatment amount while still algae-free, we can go from 1.75 cups to 1.15m so maintenance is @ 30% less.

API 87E Aquarium Water Treatments Editorial Review

API ALGAEFIX Algae Control 1.25-Ounce Bottle is a top selling algaecide in the aquarium industry. It works great for string and hair green algae. The company claims that it also treats brown algae as well as other types of algae. This product can be used with silicone decorations in the aquarium without any adverse effects. One user advised against using it in a new aquarium, while another warned about overdosing. One of the customers had an unfortunate experience where all his fish died, and he had to change everything and start from scratch. The main issue he had was with overdosing. The water turned blue for one user and killed and stressed fish for another. But another user claimed that it worked fast and cleared the water within an hour. Since many users have complained that it killed their fish, one must be careful while using this product.

Pros

  • Top selling algaecide in the aquarium industry
  • Treats green and brown algae effectively

Cons

  • May harm fish and other aquatic life
  • Overdosing can be very dangerous
  • Can lead to oxygen depletion
