No special controls or transformers are in this light. Just a dimmer switch on the wall combined with 'dimmable' certified light bulbs are what you will need.

How many wires are there to hook up? Is it just ground poz and neg?

There is only one ground, positive, and negative wire. Lights are not included, and you have to buy lights and connect them to the holder.

I love the look but only have 30' clearance. Can this be shortened and still keep the pattern?

No. There is no shortening of this light.

Are we supposed to assemble then hang or hang the plate first and then assemble the strings?

Hang the plate, install the bulbs then hang the strings one by one. It is a good idea to mark the holes with numbers as outlined in assembly directions diagram before hanging plate.

Can it be installed on a slope ceiling?

It is NOT suitable to install onto slope ceiling directly. However, you may need to use an 'adapter' so-called 'chandelier lift' to make sure it is level if you need to install.
