Is that thing on the bottom a rubber bottom that makes it hard to put into a car cup holder?

It is a rubber holder at the bottom so it is tight going into a car cup holder. However the rubber cover which keeps it from sweating is removable and then it easily fits in cup holder when getting out of car put your rubber bottom back on. Fits perfect! We love our thermos, went all over Italy with us for 75 days. Packs nicely in a back pack with no sweating!

Does the 18 oz. size fit in a car cup holder?

I buy the Taketa 40 oz and previously 32 oz sizes in their line. I never bought an 18 oz size so unsure if it will fit your car’s cup holder.
