What’s the trick to getting the pliers out easier? I have to grab something to pry it open

It should not be that difficult. I either raise the handle out with my thumb alongside the blade or on the end of the tool. Once that is extended you do need to apply pressure while exposing the players head. Mine works great. I always apply WD 40 or gun oil to any new tool I get.
