Customer Questions & Answers

  • Question : Can nyger seed be frozen to keep it fresh?
Answer : Yes, the local Wild Birds store recommends freezing nyger seed to keep it fresh. It leaves no problems and the birds refuse stale food, which never happens after it's been frozen.
  • Question : Is nyger seed low-waste?
Answer : It does leave some waste, but it is less than other seeds like sunflower shells. If you have your feeder on a solid ground or with woodchips, you will notice some mess. If you have it in the grass or in a garden with dirt, you will hardly notice anything.
  • Question : How do I know if the bag of nyger seeds has been sitting in some hot warehouse?
Answer : You don't really know, but the origin of the seeds is India and the birds will not ask about its origin as long as it's fresh.
  • Question : Will rats eat Nyger Seed?
Answer : I am not sure if rats would eat this and only the finch family likes them. I keep mine in a safe container.
  • Question : What birds like this food?
Answer : Finches are attracted to this seed. Some other birds like doves and pigeons may snack on the spilled seeds, but they prefer other food.
  • Question : Is nyjer seed the same as thistle seed?
Answer : Birders generally consider nyjer as thistle seed. Although it is also referred to as the African daisy seed, and this may cause discrepancies. It is used for goldfinches and pine siskins for the winter months, and has fairly good to very good results.
