Is it really like the original?

From what I can tell this is identical to the original release of the Tamagotchi. There are two different versions so if you want to get the first original you should get one of the ones that says ‘gen 1’. The one that could connect and breed the creatures on the device was the Connection, and that wasn’t released until later in the 2000s. This is a remake of the original from the 90s.

Some icons are missing; play, medicine and health. Defective?

Yes. They are defective and trash. Cheaply made and not worth purchasing.

What are the different pets?

They burn in random and look different when grow up.

My daughter threw out the directions after the first day. How do you know when it needs to be disciplined?

If it beeps for no reason! If an icon at the bottom right hand is lit up and showing two faces(one happy and the other sad) and it isn’t hungry then it needs to be disciplined

Are the batteries replaceable?

Yes, it is operated by one CR2032 battery.
