Yes, the bracket holder is very flexible and swivel 360 degree in 3 dimensional manner and can make the tablet face down at a table.

Yes, you can make your phone point down to the desk surface, but the upper (shorter) arm needs to be parallel to the desk surface (that is, horizontal) to make this happen. This means that the phone will be about 8.5 inches (21.5 cm) from the desk surface. You can raise the upper arm to make the phone further away, but then it will not point directly at the desk surface. You cannot have both arms vertical and swivel the top mount so the phone faces directly down.

Is this portable, does it reduce down so it can easily be carried from place to place?

The Long Arm can be folded so that it will reduce down and close to flat, and yes it can definitely be put in a bag for travel use.

The joint at the base has been very tight, but when the arm is inclined to the ipad, it falls over. Is that normal?

Please use the smaller (M3) Allen Key in the package to tighten the smaller hole in the base joint, not the bigger M4 Allen Key.

Does this tablet stand require assembly?

It does not require assembly. Included user manual have details on usage and instructions.
