Customer Questions & Answers

  • Question : What is the size of the voltage detector?
Answer : The voltage detector is pocket sized.
  • Question : What does the detector test for?
Answer : The detector tests for energized circuits and defective grounds.
  • Question : Does the detector meet safety standards?
Answer : Yes, it meets international safety standards.
  • Question : What is the difference between fluke 2ac and fluke 1ac-a1-ii?
Answer : The 2ac is the newer model with an 'always on' function. It has a button that is used only to ensure that it still has battery power. The 1ac is the older one that can be turned on or off. They both test for voltage presence the same way, but the 1ac has an audible alert function which the 2ac does not have.
  • Question : Is this better than the Klien?
Answer : I find the Fluke's build quality to be better than the Klein. If I drop the Klein, the tail cap falls off and the batteries fly out. I don't have that issue with the Fluke. Also, the power button works better, my Klein's button is too sensitive. Additionally, the Fluke can detect voltage in most tamper-resistant receptacles without having to open the shutter, while the Klein cannot.
  • Question : What does this one do better than a non-contact tester at 1/3 of the price?
Answer : The Fluke is more robustly constructed, making it suitable for heavy industrial use. Electrical professionals trust Fluke due to its reliability and durability. Cheaper alternatives may not offer the same quality and safety.
  • Question : Which version do I need to check U.S. household sockets and wires to U.S. standard light switches on walls?
Answer : You'd want the 90-1000v version of this tester for these, as they are 110/120v. It would also work for testing higher voltage appliances like dryers, water heaters, and cook stoves.
  • Question : Which voltage range is best for home use?
Answer : The Fluke 1AC-A1-II covers all voltage ranges from 90 Volts to 1000 Volts, making it suitable for home use in any country.
  • Question : Is it normal for it to come with no packaging?
Answer : Mine comes without the blister plastic package. It is just shipped in a protected envelope. This might vary depending on the seller.
  • Question : Can this determine if a lightbulb socket has power?
Answer : It will always glow when the 'hot' side is present. However, if you are missing the neutral connection to your light bulb socket, your lightbulb will not work, but the instrument will still glow, indicating power is present.
  • Question : What's the difference between the 1ac and the 2ac?
Answer : The 1AC has an audible alert and can be turned on or off. The 2AC stays on always and does not have an audible alarm.
  • Question : Will this work to test my RV for 'hot skin' condition?
Answer : Yes, but you will read it as hot everywhere on the RV.
  • Question : Can it be manually turned on without pressing the pocket hook?
Answer : It doesn't turn off, it's always on. When it reads the electrical signal, it glows without sound or buzz.

Fluke FLK2AC/90-1000V5PK Voltage Testers Editorial Review

The Fluke Voltage Tester is an essential tool for any electrical professional. The Fluke 2ac is the newer model, with an always-on feature, while the 1ac has an audible alert function that the 2ac does not have. The Fluke is better built compared to the Klein and can detect voltage in tamper-resistant receptacles without opening them, unlike the Klein. The Fluke 2ac is robustly constructed for tradesmen who use tools up to 60-70 hours a week. Choosing the right voltage range for home use depends on the voltage supplied, which is usually 120 volts, but some appliances use up to 240 volts.

Pros

  • Better build quality compared to the Klein.
  • Can detect voltage in tamper-resistant receptacles without opening them.
  • Robustly constructed for tradesmen.
  • Can detect up to 1000 volts.

Cons

  • The 2ac does not have an audible alert function like the 1ac.
  • No packaging provided.
