The grate squares are 1/2" x 1/2" dia and it can handle half an onion easily. While it is dishwasher safe, cleaning the blades can be tricky. Customers have used it for vegetables, potatoes, and French fries. However, some customers have found that it doesn't give a fine chop and leaves the vegetables in bigger pieces. It may not be suitable for nuts or fine dicing.
