Answer : It depends on the water intake of the community, but one filling may not last very long for a dozen or so people. Refilling or governing their water intake would be necessary.

LifeStraw Water Filters Editorial Review

The LifeStraw Mission is a gravity-fed water filter that can filter out bacteria, protozoa/parasites (including viruses), but can't filter out chemical and liquid contaminants. It can be used to filter out cholera in Haiti but does not filter out nitrates. The filter unit can last for 100,000 liters and comes with extra small filters for replacement. The Mission is durable and lightweight, but buyers must beware of fake systems being sold with leaking valves and missing parts. After a learning curve, the LifeStraw has been found to work well and produce a continuous flow. As for concerns about Proposition 65 warnings, it is a right to know law, and there are currently over 900 chemicals listed. Nonetheless, the LifeStraw Mission appears to be a reliable and affordable water filtration option.

Pros

  • Filters out bacteria, protozoa/parasites, including viruses.
  • Can be used to filter out cholera in Haiti.
  • Lightweight and durable.
  • Extra small filters come with the unit.
  • Affordable.

Cons

  • Does not filter out chemical and liquid contaminants.
  • Counterfeit units sold with leaking valves and missing parts.
  • Takes a bit of learning to perfect backflushing.
  • Not efficient for an entire community of homeless individuals.
