The metal fixture is a dark brass. It is such a beautiful hanging lamp. I am very pkeased with it.

Each of the globes has one larger opening and one smaller opening. Which one goes on the top?

When you watch the instructional video that comes with the lamp, it shows that you put the larger opening on top so the bulb is hanging downward.

Where can I see the star vs leaf styles?

This actually has to do with the shape of the metal decretive tassel that hangs from the bottom point. You get the choice of a star shape or a leaf shape.

Can I get this with 5 globes instead of 3?

There is a listing for 5. Just look at the store site, or look up Moroccan lamp with 5 globes.

Getting a slight odor with 40W led bulbs with actual wattage at 3.3W. Thoughts?

I use 4 watt bulbs. The same type you use in night lights. I have had no odor using these or overheating.

Can I replace my ceiling light that is hardwired? Or is this only plug in capable?
