Have any Query?

Customer Questions & Answers

  • Question : What kind of connections does this digital saxophone offer?
Answer : It offers headphone, AUX in, and micro USB connections.
  • Question : How many preset voices does this digital saxophone have?
Answer : It has 73 preset voices.
  • Question : Is there a dedicated app available for further customization?
Answer : Yes, there is a dedicated smartphone app for further customization.
  • Question : Do the keys require the same amount of pressure to push down as a standard tenor sax?
Answer : The pressure required is a bit less, but still not too far off from playing a real sax. Of course the size of the horn is closer to a soprano, so the spacing is not the same as a tenor. I would liken it to the difference between a real piano and a weighted keyboard, i.e. similar enough to be a helpful practice tool, but it is not quite the same.
  • Question : What is it like to clean this?
Answer : The manual recommends to remove, wash, and dry the mouthpiece after each playing (which, just like on the real saxophones I own, I do not actually do). To answer your question, there is a plastic tube (like an aquarium air hose) running from the mouthpiece end of the horn down to the bell, and that is where the saliva drains, very similar to a regular soprano sax.
  • Question : Does this saxophone sound like a tenor saxophone or alto saxophone?
Answer : It’s neither. It has digital saxophone sounds( soprano, alto, tenor? Baritone etc.)
  • Question : What type of mouthpiece does it use. Can one use a regular acoustic mouthpiece for soprano or alto and use real reeds? How is the sound be muffled?
Answer : The mouthpiece and reed are just so it feels like playing a sax and don’t change the sound quality—it’s just registering your breath, not actually making the sound. You can take the mouthpiece off and blow in the hole and play it that way too.
  • Question : Is it possible to bend, growl, play altissimo, vibrato, etc on this horn?
Answer : Altissimo - yes can programming your own fingerings. Growl- Not to my knowledge, don't think so. Vibrato- yes. Bend - yes.
  • Question : Can this be played without blowing into it - just by finger action?
Answer : No, the YDS cannot be play just by finger action. The instrument is sensitive to air being blown into it and the volume will increase or decrease depending on the force of that air. That said, you cannot affect pitch by your mouth the way you can with a real saxophone. There is a pitch bending mechanism however which you can control with your right thumb.
  • Question : What key is the instrument in or does it change when changing the tone?
Answer : The key will change with any of the pre-programmed instruments. For instance, the Tenor and Soprano are in Bb, and the Alto and Bari are Eb.
  • Question : Is this the same size as a standard straight acoustic soprano saxophone?
Answer : The YDS-150 measures 28 inches from the mouthpiece tip to bell end. I have never been close to a soprano sax so I do not know how they compare.
  • Question : Does this instrument have a purchase guarantee?
Answer : You can register with Yamaha easily.
  • Question : Will this connect to and work with a tone generator like a motif rack xs tone generator? i currently connect my akai ewi 5000 to this unit
Answer : I am running through a Samson MCD2pro stereo passive pc direct box to my sound system. It works great since it has the 3.5mm input. I haven't attempted to connect to a device yet that would maybe produce more voices.

YAMAHA YDS-150 Saxophones Editorial Review

The Yamaha Digital Saxophone YDS-150 is a digital saxophone with various pre-programmed instrument sounds. While it is not an exact replica of a tenor or alto saxophone, it provides a helpful practice tool for saxophone players. The instrument requires regular cleaning, similar to a soprano saxophone. It utilizes a plastic tube for saliva drainage. The mouthpiece and reed are for feel and do not affect sound quality. The saxophone allows for altissimo, vibrato, and bending notes. It cannot be played solely by finger action and requires air blown into it. The key changes with different instrument sounds. The YDS-150 does not come with a charger but can be registered with Yamaha. It can be connected to sound systems or devices with the proper inputs. Overall, customer experiences with this product vary, with some encountering poor sound quality and construction, difficulty in connecting Bluetooth, and dissatisfaction with the overall musicality. However, others find it easy to learn and enjoy playing anywhere.
