I strain the oil through kitchen paper when cold, then put it back into the bottle & into the fridge.

I haven't cooked onion rings, but I was not happy in general with this fryer.

Used it for the first time and it tripped the electric, is this a regular thing, and what's the remedy?

Same happened to me. Didn't keep box so went in bin. Would advise anyone to buy it.

How much oil does it take?

Mine went back as it did not work, however it is not a litre of oil. It is only about half a litre. Do not go over the max level inside the fryer.

Can you use the fryer without the small basket?

Yes, you can. The basket is solely for ease of removing a portion of chips/mushrooms etc. With the fryer being so small you would have to use tongs or small utensil to remove the food.
