French Editorial Review
The Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition of The Prisoner: In Search of Lost Time, Volume 5, translated by Carol Clark presents Marcel Proust's classic literary work in the typical format of dense text and page after page of monologue. The book follows Marcel and his obsession with his mistress Albertine, as he becomes a prison guard directing and redirecting Albertine throughout Paris, leading her no freedom. The narrator's love for Albertine limits his ability to comprehend reality and blinds him to some things while allowing him to see others. The book is presented from a stream of Consciousness perspective, an account of Marcel's thoughts edited for the reader's understanding. The Consistency of the text is questionable because Marcel Proust passed away before giving a final stamp of approval to any of the several versions of the novel. The edition, however, is readable and features an excellent translation, less florid than Scott Moncrieff and Kilmartin, and is based on Jean-Yves Tadie's most recent Pleiades edition. Penguin's production of this volume is different from the previous four volumes, irritating some customers.
